Becoming a Cosmetologists
I am super excited to be starting Cosmetology School in a few weeks and definitely wanted to hub about my experience. So, I am all enrolled and set to start a 9 month Cosmetology Program in my area and I am very excited. I have been pondering on going for a long time but I went through some time trying to sort through a lot of things in my life including what would be ideal for me career wise. I am 26 years old and found college to be a struggle for me mainly because I am a free spirit and my ADHD mind needs constant stimulation and excitement that sitting in a class room wasn't satisfying. The office jobs were boring. In fact, I had a difficult time conforming. I was here there and every where.
I found this job that is not really heard of but unique and perfect. About a year ago, I got a job as a Lice Removal technician. Yup, I was trained to remove head lice. Sounds disgusting but it is not as bad as it sounds. The lice is very microscopic. They do not fly and it is a service many parents are willing to pay ALOT for to get rid of the pesty problem So over time I have worked with 2 different companies and have mastered the art of Nit Picking. So I am use to washing hair, applying shampoo, conditioner, blow drying etc and I love it. I started to drift my attention away from the usual 4 year college rant many Americicans are accustomed to hearing. Trade school is not too often given as a realistic approach to obtaining a career.
I was sort of stuck and torn between many interests and passions. I love children and have a huge heart to help people. I realized that although I have a desire to help I need to be realistic about career stability and doing work I can enjoy and gives me the flexibility I need for my free spirit. For as long as I can remember I ALWAYS experiemented with my hair. I have had so many cuts, colors, weaves it makes my head spin. My hair is a huge part of me. And I love trying creative, bold looks. Right now I have a mohawk with purple hair.
I have been doing my own color for some time now but recently I Messed my hair up attempting to bleach my hair. But some way, some how I made the best of it. Above is the final result. :-)
So going back to this Beauty School Journey I am about to embark on: I will be going 3/4 time Monday Through Friday From 9 am until 2:30 PM. I have sacraficed ALOT in an effort to complete this program with minimal distraction. Luckily for me, I am staying home with my mom until I finish the Program which will be complete in July 2012!!
For Anyone who is reading and is interested in a career in Beauty, I think getting a Cosmetology License will pave the way. There are other programs that are shorter than cosmetology programs such as nail speciality, waxing, make up and esthetics (skin care) but with a Cosmetology License you are licensed in all of those areas. Here is what My School Will Cover:
- Hair Styling
- Hair Analysis
- Hair Cutting and Shaping
- Hair Coloring & Lightening
- Shampoos, Rinses, Conditioners Treatments
- Hair & Scalp Disorders & Diseases
- Safety and Health Requirements
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Chemical Restructuring
- Chemistry as Applied to Cosmetology
- Nail Care and Procedures
- Facial and Body Procedures
- Make Up Techniques
- Anatomy, Physiology and Nutrition
- Structure and Functions of the Skin
- Paramedical Esthetic
- Bacteriology
- Superfluous hair
- Chemistry as Applied to Cosmetics
- Electricity and machines
- Business practices
- Safety and Health
- Job skills
- Skin Care and Procedures
It's a lot but well worth it being able to take these skills any where and be marketable having a solid foundation. I also have a interest in makeup and styling for photo shoots. I plan to add that to my Roster as well :-) BUT one step at a time.
Building a clientele in my opinion should be in the workds before Beauty School is complete. If your objective is to open a salon, rent a chair in a salon or offer freelance services knowing how to market yourself is sooo vital to being successful. You must always in any business let people know who you are by networking, taking pictures, starting a blog, website etc. It is also important to continue to evolve. By this I mean, continuing education. The more you stay abreast of what is new and in demand the better you are able to service your clients and build new contacts. So, I will have the foundation getting my cosmetology license and getting a certificate from a Make Up School but I know in order for me to be where I want to be, I have to attend seminars, classes, watch videos, shadow master and experienced stylists.etc.
Beauty and fashion go hand in hand. When it comes to fashion ACCESSORIES is my "IT" Niche. I worked as an assistant Manager at an Accessories retail chain and as a sales advisor for a high end department store in the fashion accessories department. I LOVE jewelry, hats, scarves, pins, brooches, hair accessories and hand bags. I am Queen of thrifty fab. By that I mean, I will NEVER pay full price if I don't have to. NYC is the Bomb! There are oodles of thrift stores and cosignment stores selling top brands and designer everything and I am sure to take full advantage. I love the saying the woman makes the dress, the dress dont make the woman :-)
So....I am working on starting my own Accessories Line called Accessories Love. It has been a slow start because making my own jewelry to sell is a dream of mine and I want to make sure it is done right! As you can see, my aspirations are all in the same category. With all of this, the earnng potential and success is inevitable but I know there is so much hard work ahead of me and I am ready to grind because I refuse to be stuck in a boring career. I can't wear purple hair, a nose ring, and flashy clothes in a corporate job or a school. I prefer to be 100 percent meeee!!
Now a lot of people do not realize that they can still do what they are passionate about even if that means volunteering or finding a way to incorporate their passions into their work. I will give you an example: I love children and helping others. I have the freedom to use my skills along with my passions. I would love to donate my time to doing make overs for single moms, young women at prom, princess for a day, test shoots for aspiring models etc. There are so many ways to give and I promised myself and GOD that I would always give back. I do not feel as if I am abandoning my calling. However my need for creativity, independence and a entreprenuership approach to making money is a MUST.
In closing....My Journey To becoming a Beautician Starts soon. I will receive a Kit with items for me to keep, a manicuin to practice on, books...the works and I am so excited!!! So, I will be sharing my journey. Most likely I will be cross-Posting my entries to other article based sites such as hubpages and Squidoo. Thanks for reading!! Feed back, questions and comments welcome.
